£12,464 Damages
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 14. A jury in the Supreme Court at Wellington tonight awarded a former school matron £12,464 damages against the board of St. Matthew’s Collegiate School for Girls, Masterton. Myrtle Olive McFarlane, aged 54, married, had claimed £20,000 general damages and £lO3O special damages for injuries suffered when she fell from a fire escape platform at the college in October last year. She was awarded £13,000 general damages and £B4B 16s 6d special damages. The total was reduced by 10 per cent, representing her contributory negligence. A motion for non-suit moved in midtrial by Mr N. A. Morrison was renewed tonight. Mr Justice Hutchison again reserved his decision. The defendant was granted leave to move within 21 days to set aside the verdict. Summing up, his Honour said it was an employer’s duty to take reasonable care to guarantee the safety of his staff.
