Alignment With China Feared
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) WASHINGTON, November 14. United States officials are disturbed that Cambodia which on Wednesday renounced American military and economic aid may draw closer to the Communist bloc, particularly China.
Cambodia has a strategic importance that overshadows its dimensions. The United States keeps about 60 men there to oversee the military aid programme, which last year totalled 10,400.000 dollars. Economic aid in 1963 will be about 18,800,000 dollars. Prince Norodom Sihanouk, a neutralist, told a press conference that he would refuse all American assistance after January 1. American and French
troops would have to leave the country. Earlier he announced nationalisation of import apd export business and of the Cambodian banks as of the end of next June. He called the moves part of his programme of “advanced socialism.” He said he would call in five Communist Chinese experts to help organise State control. Cambodia is bordered by South Vietnam, Thailand and Laos. United States officials fear that if Cambodia shifts from its non-alignment policy it could drive a wedge between Thailand and Vietnam. This would create a serious situation for the United States on the Indo-China Pc.iinsula.
