Compensation For Accused Men
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, November 14. Police will pay about £l5OO damages to four persons who were charged with possessing “offensive weapons” during the visit of Queen Frederika of Greece in July.
Two of the four are Mr Donald Rooum, a 35-year-old cartoonist who works for the "Spectator” and “Peace News,” and John Apostolou, aged 17. Both were alleged to have carried bricks during the Royal visit. Mr Rooum was acquitted. Mr Apostolou was fined £lO, but later he was cleared on appeal. The two others were juveniles and the cases against them were not proceeded with.
The solicitor for the four, Mr Clinton Davis, said he
understood Mr Rooum would get £5OO and Mr Apostolou £4OO. The others would get £250 and £2OO. With costs the total would come to more than £l5OO sterling. The police have completely vindicated the accused. The damages will be ex gratia payments on behalf of the Police Commissioner. Scotland Yard has appointed a senior investigator to inquire into the affair. A West End detective concerned in the case is on sick leave.
