ROTORUA BACK IN AIRWAYS NETWORK

(New Zealand Press Association)

ROTORUA, Nov. 11. Rotorua rejoined the national airways network this morning—just a year since work on the £350,000 airport at Rotokawa began. A seven-year break was closed by a South Pacific Airlines of New Zealand Viewmaster which touched down at 8.20 a.m. An hour later the apron was crowded with four DC3’s —three S.P.AUZ. Viewmasters and a National Airways Corporation Skyliner, Rotorua. It was the whole S.P.A.N.Z. fleet. During the day 14 aircraft movements were handled by the 4500 ft sealed runway.

Rotorua had its last national link in December, 1956, when N.A.C. withdrew its Heron service. S.P.A.N.Z. flights from Gisborne Napier and Auckland brought eight mayors and deputy-mayors to the airport where they were welcomed by Mr A. M. Linton, Mayor of Rotorua. A special N.A.C. inaugural flight carrying 26 invited guests, including Guide Rangi, left in the morning for Wellington. The chairman of N.A.C., Sir Andrew McKee, was among those at Wellington Airport to welcome passengers on the flight from Rotorua.
