SWEDEN’S TOP DESIGNER
Miss A. Sampe’s Career The new coaches which have just come into service on Sweden’s State railways are perhaps the most attractively decorated in the world. Understandably so: the "colour co-ordination,” as the official term is, has been in the hands of Astrid Sampe, writes Susan Vaughan from London. Miss Sampe is one-of the world’s top designers. You can see her interior decoration work in Swedish embassies in such far-flung places as Washington and Tokyo, Addis Ababa and Belgrade. She decorated the interior of a women’s prison in Sweden, and the private railway coach of the Swedish royal family. Her designs for materials, carpets and rugs are known all over the world. She is an extremely attractive, well-groomed woman. “Good design,” she says, “starts with oneself.”
