Swiss Approve Arms Deal
(N.Z.PJL.-Reuter—Copyright) BERNE, Nov. 13. The Swiss Government has authorised the delivery of anti-aircraft guns and ammunition to South Africa from the Oerlikon factory near Zurich “because they were exclusively for air defence.” The Swiss Government forbids the sale of weapons which could be used in civil war, or to countries where war is in progress or likely to break out. A spokesman for the Oerlikon arms factory announced on November 8 it had negotiated a deal with South Africa for the delivery of an unspecified quantity of guns and ammunition. Switzerland, a neutral country, is not a member of the United Nations. It has not signed the ban on the sale of arms to South Africa, but no arms can be exported without Government permission.
Back Home.— The main body of 198 Tristan da Cunha islanders have landed on their lonely volcanic home after two years’ exile.—London, November 13.
