FARM INCOME UP 4 P.C.
Estimates For 1962-63
Gross farming income in 1962-63 rose £26.6 million to £326.4 million and the corresponding volume index rose 4 per cent, according to the Government Statistician (Mr J. V. T. Baker). “A favourable increase in prices, notably for wool, mutton and lamb, together with a rise in production made 1962-63 a very good season.” he says. This year’s compilation of gross farming income departs from the three-division classification that has been used by the Department of Statistics for many years. Instead of using the grouping, “agriculture,” “dairying, etc.," and “pastoral.” the seven groups are now: grain and field crops, horticulture, poultry and bees, wool, mutton and lamb, beef, dairying, and pigs. “It is felt that this new commodity classification will be of more significance and of greater practical value in this field of statistics,” Mr Baker adds.
