STRAY DOGS IN WAIMAIRI

Accommodation By

Council

Accommodation for stray dogs is to be provided by the Waiimairi County Council. A letter from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals informed the council that because of a recent prosecution by the Paparua County Council the society had no option but to discontinue running its animal home. The council was asked to remove all dogs collected in the county from the home.

The county inspector (Mr I. H. Wilson) reported that about 12 dogs a year were seized in the county. He said the society would still house stray dogs at a cost of 25s a week and registration fee. The chairman (Mr J. I. Colligan) said the omission of a grant to the society would cover the costs involved. The council decided to provide accommodation in its yard for two dogs and to make arrangements for the welfare of any dogs "in custody.”
