WATERSIDE WORK
Two Shifts Advocated (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, November 13. A two-shift waterfront working day would speed the turn-round of ships and improve living standards in New Zealand, the Minister of Laibour (Mr Shand) told Auckland watersiders at a lunch-hour meeting today. “This 11-hour day you’re working now is just crazy,” he said. Waterside wages for overseas ships were about £4 million a year, but shipping cargo to and from New Zealand cost nearly £5O million, he pointed out. Ships spent about eight months of the year alongside wharves. “We should get down to it and see if we can’t run this job more sensibly,” he said. “That means you, the shipping companies and all the other people concerned in handling cargo through our ports.” Mr Shand said he was “quite certain” watersiders would earn as much money on an eight-hour day basis as the present 11-hour system. Working two shifts, the second finishing at 11 p.m., nearly twice as much winch time would be available.
