Auckland Firemen’s Ultimatum
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, November 13. As the result of a dispute over special payment with the Auckland Metropolitan Fire Board, the officers and men of the Auckland Fire Brigades’ Union will refuse all work, except fire-fighting, as from 9 a.m. tomorrow.
A resolution to this effect was passed unanimously at a special union meeting on Monday and it was confirmed by secret ballot today. The union also decided to take immediate action and waive the normal fortnight’s notice of its intention to strike. The president, Mr A. W. Monk, said the board refused to pay an additional 17s a day to firemen who relieved station officers. This special payment was embodied in the firemen’s award, he said. He said the board had given no notice of its intention to cut pay, and the union would give the board no advanced notice of the proposed direct action. When the secretary of the board (Mr R. J. W. Levis) was ihformed of the men’s decision, he said there were some payments in dispute, but until the board received official intimation of the firemen’s demands he could not comment.
