SEWERAGE FOR STATION

Council Not To Reduce Charge On the motion of Cr. R. H. Duff, the Lyttelton Borough Council decided to inform the Railways Department that it could not reduce the sewerage charge for the new Lyttelton station below £5O . According to a letter from the department's district engineer, they had been paying an annual sewerage charge of £25. There appeared to be no knowledge of how this figure was originally struck back in 1910, the letter said. The department could not pay more than was laid down by the Treasury, the letter said. In view of this the council’s proposal to increase the rate to £5O was not valid. A petition signed by 26 persons criticising a new pathway on Ticehurst road above the road tunnel portal, was received by the council. According to the petition, the pathway was too steep and unsafe for pedestrians, particularly women. The pathway would become more dangerous in winter, the petition said, and asked the council to provide a suitable rail to assist people. On the motion of Cr. N. D. Parratt it was decided to refer the request to the works committee and to inform the petitioners that the matter would be attended to shortly. The council granted £lO to the Lyttelton Plunket Society.
