Tennis NUNNELEY CASKET
Challenge May Yet Be Made A recommendation by the selectors that Canterbury should not challenge for the Nunneley Casket—the symbol of women’s provincial tennis —was not accepted at a meeting of the management committee of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association. After a prolonged discussion on the matter it was decided that the selectors be asked to reconsider the matter if finance was available for a team to travel to Auckland for the challenge match. The chairman of the selection committee (Mr J. Anderson) said the top Canterbury women players had been asked if they had been available for the challenge and when it was found that the top woman player. Miss J. Davidson, was not available, it was decided not to make a challenge. Mr D. D. M. Stewart did not agree with the selectors’ decision. He said that if the other Canterbury top players were available it would be a disappointment to them if they were not allowed to gain valuable experience. "If finance permits we should send a team—it was about seven weeks ago that this matter was discussed and by that time the finance could have been raised,” he said. "We should send a team even though without Miss Davidson we may not win a thing." Mr Anderson: The selectors think we would not even win a game. After the chairman (Mr M. C. Healey) had told the meeting that about £lOO would be needed to send the team it was decided that the matter should be deferred for a further opinion from the selectors. The selectors also advised the meeting that no decision had been made whether Canterbury should challenge for the Wilding Shield. The top three or four men players had been approached on the matter and the selection I committee would be able to i make a recommendation to I the next meeting.
