Leader Flies 351 Miles
(N.Z. Press Association) MASTERTON, Nov. 12. J. Cooper, of the Auckland Gliding Club, with a flight of 351 miles, capped a successful third day of the New Zealand gliding championships at Masterton today. Cooper’s flight was the more creditable as his aircraft was not equipped with radio and he was not able to use high altitude flying. He set out on an out-and-return flight from Hood aerodrome at Gwava's camp. 190 miles. He returned over the aerodrome at 14,000 feet and then turned round and flew to Wairoa. landing in the grounds of Wairoa College. His performance placed him at the head of the day's 25 contestants, and also put his club in the lead on aggregate points for the club award. Cooper’s performance, subject to confirmation by photographs of his passing the turning points, will win him the international diamond award. The results were:— Scratch Open.—J. Cooper (Auckland).
