Mighty Hanover Just Beats Control

Mighty Hanover confirmed a bold run at the recent trials and trotted his way to favouritism for the Dominion Handicap on Friday when he won the Worthy Queen Handicap at Addington yesterday. Mighty Hanover came on the scene late in the race and got up in the last stride to shade Control.

Wairau King, Flaming Way, Min Scott, Queen’s Cord, Gay Jillian and Reprimand gave ground early. Our Jimmy set the pace, being closely attended by Control over the last six furlongs. Our Jimmy and Control led to the straight a length and a half in front of Robert Medoro and With You. Then came Flaming Way. Mighty Hanover, Reprimand, Our Own, Resistor and Moon Boy. Our Jimmy was soon in trouble and Control looked the likely winner. Mighty Hanover then challenged and got up to win by a nose. Control fought on gamely for second, a short length ahead of Robert Medoro, a half-brother to the winner. Robert Medoro had every chance. Our Own made up ground in grand style for fourth a length away, with a head to Our Jimmy, a neck to Flaming Way, a length to Min Scott and a length to Moon Boy, which was followed by Wairau King, with a gap to Harbour Light and another to With You and Reprimand. Second Leg Avante was checked and Antonius, Lakeda, Van Rebeck and Autumn Folly lost ground at the start of the second leg of the double, the Spring Handicap. Ahumai was first out, but at the end of three furlongs

Trade Fair improved to take over. He was passed a furlong later by Safe Return, which set a leisurely pace. Safe Return was still pacing comfortably racing to the straight where Johnny Thunder, Inglemead, Trade Fair, Ahumai, Van Rush. Antonius. Marquess, Chiffon and Avante were prominent. Safe Return did not look like being caught and he won handily by a length from a solid-finishing Chiffon, which was awkwardly placed racing to the straight. Trade Fair, which had trouble working clear in the straight, was only a head away third, with another head to Inglemead and a neck to Marquess, which was clear of Lauder Scott, Antonius, Adios Heather, Johnny Thunder. Peebles, Autumn Folly and Lakeda. Second Win Admit gave his trainer, W. R. Butt, his second training and driving success when he won the Canterbury Handicap in a close finish with Jay Ar.
