Appendectomy In Glacier
Junior Seaman Derek Lory, of Hamilton, serving aboard H.M.N.Z.S. Rotoiti. was operated on successfully on Monday afternoon aboard the icebreaker US.S. Glacier at sea in the area of Campbell
Island. Seaman Lory suffered an attack of appendicitis aboard the Rotoiti while the ship was sailing to relieve the U.S.S. Hissem on radar picket station for American Antarctic flights.
The Glacier was diverted to meet the Rotoiti near Campbell Island and take the sick sailor aboard for treatment by the ice-break-er's medical ojcer (Lieutenant J. T. Dinan). Lieutenant Dinan determined that an appendectomy was needed, and after obtaining permission to operate from Seaman Lory’s mother, Mrs R. Lory, and from the captain of the Rotoiti. operated on Monday afternoon. In a message to Seaman Lory’s mother, Hie captain of the icebreaker said the operation was completely successful, and ‘‘Derek is resting comfortably." Present plans are for Seaman Lory to convalesce aboard the Glacier until she reaches McMurdo Sound, when he will be flown back to Christchurch.
