Supermarket Likely
About three acres of land on the Main North road at Papanui has been bought by the New Zealand Farmers' Co-operaitdve Association of Canterbury,. Ltd for development of a major shopping centre or supermarket, with extensive car-parking facilities. Nothing definite has been planned yet. but it is probable that the development will take the form of a supermarket rather than a centre with shops let to other businesses Mr R H Clark, the general manager, will go overseas next year, and some o' his time will be snent investigating modern shopping centres and supermarkets. The land, which is next to the Phoenix Hotel and includes the old Waimairi County Council buildings and yard, vas bought by the company from three land owners, and the total price was about £50,000
About a quarter of an acre was sold Turf Contractors. Ltd., 1 acre 32 perches was sold by the McVicar Trading Company. Ltd. (this was formerly the county council property), and the other block of an acre and a half was sold by E King. Ltd. Purchase of the properties was negotiated by Sherris and Wilscn, Ltd. Hay’s Ltd. recently decided to finance a major suburban shopping centre in the area.
