A Bit Much “Good heavens! Your advertising is somewhat exaggerated.” said Mr Sam McGredy, the famous Irish rose grower, to his hosts from the Canterbury Horticultural Society yesterday as they walked up to the Majestic Theatre. The big sign over the entrance announced the entertainment within as the “Nude Odyssey,” but Mr McGredy was not to know that a French film of that name had been suspended for the evening so that he could talk about roses. Disciplined . The American professional Dave Hill was fined 100 dollars when he broke his putter in two after missing a shot on the eighteenth green in the Frank Sinatra open golf tournament today. Hill, who snapped the club in view of the gallery and a television audience, won 272 dollars for his 288 tournament total. Reduced by 100 dollars this left him with 172 dollars for his effort.—Palm Springs, Nov. 11. Rose For Tralee Tralee will soon have its own rose. Mr Sam McGredy. world famous breeder of roses, said in Christchurch yesterday that strange as it might seem, there was really no rose of Tralee. “So we are growing one.” he said. Big Diamond A 10% carat blue and white diamond has been found in Basutoland. It is valued at £12,500. It was found on the site of a prehistoric swamp, high in the mountains.—-Lon-don, Nov. 11.
Linwood High School
Financial authority for £ 14.288 las been issued by the Department of Education to the Ministry of Works for a contract to be let to the successful tenderer for the erection of four new classrooms at Linwood High School. The department has also approved a grant of £993 to cover the cost of extending the woodwork room at the school. Adv : e to this effect was received from the department by the school’s Board of Governors at its monthly meeting last evening. Auckland Rose The Auckland Rose Society will send between 500 and 1000 roses to Wellington by air today in response to the appeal by the Wellington Rose Society for blooms for the national convention. —(P.A.)
