HELLAWELL SOLOIST
Civic Orchestra Concert A programme of predominantly romantic music will be presented by the Christchurch Civic Orchestra, conducted by John Ritchie, in its last concert for the year, in the Civic Theatre next Monday evening. The programme ranges from Schubert to Delius and includes operatic excerpts as well as the delightful “Les Patineurs” ballet music by Meyerbeer. The soloist for this concert will be the well-known soprano, Elizabeth Hellawell, who will sing the “Willow Song” and “Ave Maria” from the last act of Verdi’s “Otello.” This is one of Verdi’s most inspired scenes. Contrasting with Verdi’s tragedy will be the Overture to Wagner’s great comedy, “The Mastersingers of Nuremberg,” a work which is expected to suit the orchestra well at this stage of its development. Schubert’s “Unfinished” Symphony and shorter works by Delius and Dvorak will complete the programme.
