Canterbury In Fourth Place (N.Z. Press Association) MASTERTON, Nov. 10. The Wellington-Wairarapa Gliding Club led the interclub competition at the end of the first day of the New Zealand gliding championships at Masterton today. The five leaders tonight were:—Wellington-Wairarapa, 801 points, 1; Auckland, 795, 2; Wanganui, 781, 3; Canterbury, 717, 4; Piako, 708, 5. Mr J. Messervy, of Christchurch set an early task for a triangular 50 miles run on Hood, Featherston, Longbush and Hood. Twentyfour sailplanes entered but none was able to make the turn because of strong westerly conditions. A new task, an out and return from the aerodrome to Lake Ferry (78 miles), was set. Twenty-one planes completed the course. Results for both the scratch and handicap sections were: P. Higginbotham (Wellington, Rhonsegler KA6CR), 1000 points, 1; H. Scoffin (Auckland, Standard Austria), 954, 2; P. De Renzy (Tauranga, Rhonsegler KA6CR), 857, 3. In the turbulent conditions Higginbotham averaged 120 miles an hour on his return flight. The titles will continue until November 16.
