APPRENTICE BUTCHERS
8000-Hour Term (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. Nov. 11. An apprenticeship term of 8000 hours, to be reviewed in two years, is provided for in the first apprenticeship order for the retail meat industry. In making the order, released today, the Arbitration Court has prescribed that the minimum age for an apprentice shall be 15 and that no apprentice may be engaged without consent of the appropriate local committee. The order provides for a probationary period of not more than three months. A further period of probation is provided for if an apprentice transfers to another employer. A graduated scale of wages is set, beginning for the first 1000 hours with 42 per cent, of a journeyman butcher’s minimum weekly rate (at present £l4 7s 6d) and Increasing to 77 per cent, aifter 7000 hours. Hours of work shall be those normally worked by journeymen and apprentices under 16 shall not be permitted to work overtime. Those over 18 will be permitted up to six hours’ overtime a week.
