Spin And Pace Attack Routs South Africans

South Africa, who had lost six wickets for 164 in their second innings against South Australia at stumps today, face their first defeat of their Australian tour. Trailing South Australia’s first innings of 573 by 198 runs, the Springboks made a disastrous start when the pace bowler, G. Brooks, dismissed D. B. Pithey (for a duck), E. J. Barlow and W. S. Farrer in three overs for 32 runs.

Two young legspinners, P. Sellers and I. Chappell, put the South Africans on the defensive when they ] were able to get some ] turn out of the pitch. R. G. Pollock played a lazy late cut and was caught by the w’icket-keeper, B. Jarman. J. Lindsay walked in front of a top-spinner, and J Bland— trying to drive a lofted ball —was well caught at deep mid-off. P. Carlstem fought desperately. but with J. H. B. Waite still nursing an injured shoulder, although willing to bat if required, the touring team was in trouble. Carlstein reached his 50 after batting 143 minutes and hitting six fours, but other batsmen looked competent against the leg spin. lan adding only three to his overnight 146, but G. S. Sobers went on to finish with 155 ( 286 minutes. 18 fours) although he made no really big attempt to kill the bowling in the hot weather. Hie off-spinner, M. A. Seymour, showed much better control as he pushed the ball through quicker. He took his first wicket in his twenty-third over, after having 119 runs hit off him yesterday.
