INCREASES IN PAY
Glassworkers’ Union
A new scale of wages was arrived at in conciliation by the Canterbury Glasswoirkers’ Union and Crown Crystal Glass Pty. Ltd.. The increases range from 10s a week to £1 13s lid a week, when 40 hours are worked, 'with additional increases if more than 40 hours are worked. The new wage and work contract comes into force on Monday, and remains in force until April 30, 1985. Details of the agreement were announced yesterday in a statement by the president of the union (Mir S. Isherwood) and the secretary (Mr W. Francis).
The agreement includes basic increases of 3d an hour for day workers and 3Jd an hour for shift wankers, giving a new hourly rate of 6s lid and 6s 10id respectively. It also includes an increase of Is 6d a day in shift allowance, and a long-service bonus which automatically increases the hourly rates after three years’ service by Id an hour, after seven years by lid an hour and after nine years by 2d an hour. A flat payment of £5 a worker is to be made immediately in lieu of back pay.
The workers’ assessors recommended acceptance of the new contract and at a special meeting of the union yesterday the conditions were unanimously accepted. The meeting also resolved to thank the Canterbury Trades Council for its support, and in particular Mr F. Langley, who acted as workers’ advocate in conciliation before the conciliation commissioner
(Mr S. W. Armstrong), and addressed members at the special meeting.
