OLD BOYS ON TOP

Ryan Takes Six Wickets

With their strong batting coming off fairly conclusively, and the bowling doing a fully adequate job. Old Boys were in a comfortable position at the end of the first day’s play in the match against East Christ-church-Shirley at Burwood Park. However, although Old Boys 232 runs were scored in well under three hours. East also contributed to the quick scoring and at he end of the day, 408 runs had been scored tn six hours. East-Shirley won the toss but found the spin bowling of M. L Ryan and B. A. Bolton troublesome on the rather damp and slow pitch. Again the opening batsmen scored a half century for the first wicket—this time 52—but again the middle-order did not do its job S R. Home hooked as confidently as usual and J. D. Capstick made a valuable 34 B. A. Haworth defended stoutly for an hour while P. G Coman batted attractively. Ryan bowled an accurate length with a bevy of three or four short-leg fieldsmen and reaped the advantages of a pitch taking a reasonable amount of turn and Bolton's low trajectory and sharp turn made him a problem at all times D Hill and Bolton made a steady start to Old Boys innings and the 50 opening partnership was in better than even time B G. Hadlee came and stayed for 46 runs but looked strangely ill at ease C. J. Stevens and R. J. B. West made considerable contributions in their rumbustious ways while all the time Hill was moving towards a century that seemed his for the asking until one of his •many fine on-side shots was caught by Coman. C. K. Smart changed ends after five overs and bowled 23 overs before he was relieved when Stevens and West were taking a successful long-handle to him. B. G. Adamson bowled usefully enough to capitalise on the hitting at the end and take the last four wickets.

The declaration left East 50 minutes’ batting time. Capstick and Home looked sufficiently at ease to stay but when they left. W. R. Bar bare! probed through the defences of the early batting to leave Old Boys 86 in front, six wickets to take, and a day to play. Scores:— EAST-SHIRLEY First Innings J. D.
