CRICKET St. Albans, Riccarton Secure Strong Positions
St. Albans and Riccarton look likely to establish a commanding lead in the senior championship. On Saturday, when the third round began, these teams secured very strong positions, with the third side, Lancaster Park, badly placed against Riccarton.
After rain during the week, there was some assistance for the bowlers for a time, and scoring generally was tedious. J. W. Burtt, only 19 years old, scored a fine century for St. Albans. Old Collegians were dismissed for 49, the lowest score of the season, and this modest record was lowered later by Sydenham, which was out for 48.
Burtt’s century, his first in the senior grade, took his side out of difficulties after a quick loss of wickets. D. Hili scored 83 for Old Boys, and the New Zealand fast bowlers. R. C. Mota and G. A. Bartlett, both gave vigorous displays in scoring more than 60.
M. L. Ryan, bowling offbreaks for Old Boys, took six wickets. A. R. Taylor and K. Ferries each took five wickets tn Sydenham's collapse, and B H. Hopkins, also with five wickets, was primarily re-
sponsible for Old Collegians’ failure. Scores:— St. Albans 236 for eight wickets, declared; Sydenham 48 and 8 for no wicket. East Christchureh-Shir-ley 138 and W for four wiekets; Old Boys 232 for seven wickets, declared. Old Collegians 49 and 161 for fon r wiekets; West Christchurch - University 158. Riccarton 200: Lancaster Park "2 for seven wickets.
