LOST NEAR OARO
Shooter Spent Night In Open
A man who got lost while deer-shooting in the hills in the Kaikoura area on Saturday reached a farm yesterday afternoon after spending Saturday night in the open. He is Russell West, aged 25, of 97 Locksley avenue, Christchurch.
Mr West, David Brockie. of 35 Conference street, and Lawrence Brown, of 241 Fifield terrace, were camped in the Stag and Spey Valley Mr West went into the hills about 5.30 a.m. on Saturday. He did not return on Saturday evening, and his companions began a search at dawn yesterday. When they did not find him they informed the Kaikoura police about midday. A search party set off from Glencree, the station of Messrs R. R. and J. G. Laidlaw, of Oaro. The party consisted of Constable T. Mickell, and Messrs J. G. Laidlaw, Brockie, and Brown, but Mr West arrived at Surrey Downs, the nearby property of Mr J. A. Gray, about 3 p.m. In the morning he had climbed to a hilltop and got his bearings. He had had no food except a few sandwiches.
