October JI. president Kennedy today signed a Bill authorising a 32# miliion-dollsr programme to tackle the problem of men|tal retardation. The project is one of personal interest to the President one of whose sister*. Rosemary. * mentally retarded and has been in an institution for, year*. ~ .h The legislation provides fofa the construction of com-W inunity health centres aiKft’ other research and treatment facilities. The President said research in the next few year* m ght make it possible to prevent mental retardation in most case*. The Kennedy family itself get up a foundation to deal with the problem in 194# and has (iven more than 18.000.000 dollars to hospitals, institutions and research projects in the field of mental I health.
