BLOAT IN HERDS
All West Coast Affected
(From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH, November 1. Bloat is occurring in dairy herds all over the West Coast. Mr J. M. Lockhart, farm advisory officer with the Department of Agriculture in Greymouth, said yesterday. He was referring to a report that between 50 and 75 per cent of the da-'ry herds in the Kokatahi - Kowhitirang.i area were affected by bloat and that an average of one cow out of each herd had died. Mr Lockhart agreed that bloat was occurring in that area and said that it was also noticeable around Harihari. These were principally dairy areas and so were the areas most affected.
Farmers in the KokatahiKowhitirangi district are working long hours spraying pastures and treating cows affected by bloat. As a result of more intensive cultivation, pastures are showing better growth and the herds are becoming more susceptible.
Bloat has been prevalent in the valley for the last six or seven years but this year it is more widespread. Production has been affected, but not yet to a greet extent.
