Four N.Z. Players Qualify For Aust. Golf Finals

Charles with a two-under-scratch 72—six strokes better than his opening round yesterday—today qualified for the final two rounds of the Australian Open golf championship with an aggregate of 150. Three of the New Zealand Commonwealth tournament amateur team also qualified. •

R. R. Newdick led the trio on 147 (73, 74). S. G. Jones had a 73 and 76 far 149 and R. C. Murray 74 and 76 for 150.

The team youngsters, B. T. Boys, with 153, aind T. S. Leech, 154, just missed qualifying, but P. K. Creighton (161) and R. Mackie (162) were well out of it. The qualifying mark was 152 or better.

Newdick •• was two-under with two holes to play today,

but had one-overs on the last two holes. They cost him the leading amateur position.

The South African professional. Gary Player, celebrated his twenty-eighth birthday with a second consecutive round of 70 to share the leadership. Davis Has 72 Player, who is defending the title, joined the overnight leader, John Davis, a New South Wales left-hander, on 140. Davis added 72 today to yesterday’s 68. The qualifiers for the final 36 holes tomorrow included the British amateurs, R. B. Shade, M. F. Bonallack, S. C. Saddler, and South Africans, J. Hayes, J. Le Roux, D. Kemp and B. He finished with a second round 73 and was two strokes behind the leaders. On 144 is P. W. Thomson, of Australia, with the next nearest bunch on 146.
