The Rev. R. Byers, minister of the Caversham church, Dunedin, was appointed administrative secretary and student adviser to the theological education committee by the Presbyterian General Assembly yesterday. He will replace Dr. J. D. Salmond, who has held the position since 1947, and is retiring after 30 years’ active ministry. Mr Byers, wtio is 57 years of age, received his theological training at Knox College, Dunedin, and Westminster College, Cambridge, after completing an MA degree in philosophy at Otago University. He has had 30 years’ pastoral experience, and has served in the parishes of Carterton, St. Albans, Christchurch, St. Andrews, New Plymouth, and has been minister at Caversham, Dunedin, since 1955. He has been moderator of the presbyteries of Wairanapa, Christchurch, and Taranaki, and was chairman of the General Assembly’s arrangements committee when the assembly met in New Plymouth in 1952. The author of three books, one on travel and two of children’s sermons, Mr Byers has had wide administrative experience on church student wwk committees. He has served on the General Assembly's youth and publications committees, has been convener of the theological education committee for seven years, a member of the Knox College council, and chairman of the assembly student selection committee. He has also served as a member of the theological hall senatus.
