DISCUSSION DENIED

Labour And Communists

There had definitely been no discussions between the Labour .Party and the Communist Party on the Communist Party’s withdrawal of its candidate for Lyttelton, said the president of the Christchurch Labour Representation Committee (Mr R. Jones) last evening. Mr Jones was commenting on a statement by the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) that the “frantic efforts” of the member for Lyttelton (Mr N. E. Kirk) to shake oft the Labour Party’s “embarrassing associations with the Communist Party” were not convincing. Mr Jones said he regarded Mr Holyoake’s statement with contempt. “I challenge Mr Holyoake to prove that there has been any discussion between the Labour Party and the Communist Party on this subject. I would be prepared to go on a public platform to verify my statements.”

Mr Jones said it was about time the National Party brought itself up to date and stopped living “in the dark ages of the Whig period.”
