TOO MANY ADVOCATES
Claim Upheld And Opposed
(N2. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 1. An advocate supporting an application to the Arbitration Court and another opposing it, today both claimed to represent the same union. The president of the Federation of Labour (Mr T. E. Skinner) represented a number at affiliated unions supporting an application by Utah-WiUiamson-Burnett for exemption from 23 awards on the Manapouri power project. He produced a written authority from the Otago Electrical Workers’ Union, which is affiliated to the F.OXu, to appear on its behalf.
Mr A. J. Neary, representing the Electrical Workers’ Association, also claimed to represent the union, which is affiliated to the association.
Mr Neary opposed the application. Mr Neary said he had been authorised to represent the Otago union after a telephone conversation with its secretary. Mr Neary had explained the terms of an industrial agreement drawn up to the secretary. The union had been misled by the terms of the agreement, said Mr Neary.
Mr Justice Tyndall later asked Mr Neary to produce a written authority from the union.
The Court adjourned sine die so that interested parties could .clarify certain points in the agreement.
