Field Goal After 18 Min. Wins Game For Newport

NEWPORT, October 31. Nearly 30,000 people crammed into Rodney Pride ground to see the AU Blacks play the third match of their tour, against Newport. The ground was softened slightly by overnight rain.

Newport attacked with tremendous spirit, won the first couple of line-outs and a scrum against the head. After 10 minutes. New Zealand went into Newport territory for the first time, but a penalty relieved for the home team.

When Tremain was off-side round a scrum, Cheney took a shot a yard on the New Zealand side of half-way and six yards from touch. It missed narrowly. After 18 minutes. New Zealand was again penalised in the line-out and Cheney placed the ball 43 yards out and eight from touch. It hooked just outside.

Newport came back from the drop-out with a slashing run by D. Watkins and a kick back to the centre by S. Watkins, the wing. Newport Leads

New’ Zealand took the ruck, but the Newport forwards took it back and, from in front, Uzzell dropped a snap goal to put Newport three pointe up after 18 minutes. Soon, D. Watkins broke again and Clarke was forced to carry the ball back. Rain thickened as the New Zealand forwards strove to drive through, but again Newport snapped the ball away from them and D. Watkins lined deep.

At last, the New Zealand forwards came away magnificently. Nathan, Whineray. Major and Lochore rolled away for 40 yards. But Davis was ruled off-side from the resulting kick by Walsh. Another penalty went to Newport after New Zealand had hooked from the scrum. Cheney tried from SO yards, but it was short.

Newport took a third tighthead. but Clarke relieved following a kick-through.

A 45-yard touch-finder by Cheney from a penalty took Newport to the New Zealand line. It was almost dark, with IS minutes to go. as a penalty relieved for New Zealand. The crowd was In a constant uproar as they sensed the defeat of the All Blacks Showing vastly increased vigour, the New Zealand forwards drove into the Newport half D. Watkins relieved with two good touch-finders, one when he was given the ball after a Newport scrum against the head

Women's Tennis. Four mid-week women's field days will be held by the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association at Wilding Park this season. With A and B grade doubles competitions, these days have been highly popular in recent seasons. The dates will be November 7, December 5, February 6, and March 5.
