NEWPORT, October 31. Nearly 30,000 people crammed into Rodney Pride ground to see the AU Blacks play the third match of their tour, against Newport. The ground was softened slightly by overnight rain.

Newport attacked with tremendous spirit, won the first couple of line-outs and a scrum against the head. After 10 minutes. New Zealand went into Newport territory for the first time, but a penalty relieved for the home team.

When Tremain was off-side round a scrum, Cheney took a shot a yard on the New Zealand side of half-way and six yards from touch. It missed narrowly. After 18 minutes.
