Purchase By Bridge Club

Acting as agent for the Cranmer Club, Mr ri. Simpson bought Dr. Douglas Anderson’s historic red house at 25 Armagh street for £7200 at public auction yesterday afternoon.

The sale aroused much interest. Many of the 60 persons present were members of the Cranmer Club. There were cries of delight from several women when it was announced that Mr Simpson was the successful bidder. The initial bid was £6300 There were nine bids of £lOO. The auctioneer was Mr D O. The house, which is on the west corner of Cranmer square and Armagh street, is two-storey. Downstairs is a lounge, dining-room, study, waiting-room, bedroom, bathroom, kitchenette, laundry and cloakroom. There are two double bedrooms. two sun bedrooms, and a bathroom upstairs. When it was built In 1863 by Mr Dougal McFarlane, who was in the wine and spirit business, a cellar was incorporated in the house Mr McFarlane, a veteran of the Crimean war, died in 1882. In 1899. the then owner. Mr Hurst Seagar, an eminent architect, added to the house The original house is the two-storey brick part at the rear, to which was added the wine along Armagh street. Mrs A Rose, the president of the Cranmer Club, a bridge club, said the club had no intention of altering the house in any way. and wanted to preserve Its oldworld cha m. The members of the club were glad they had been able to purchase the property and assist in some way in preserving the history of the city.
