WIN ON FIRST INNINGS

Park Spinners Bowl Well Lancaster Park 168 East Christchurch-Shirley 104/8 At lunch-<time in the match at Burwood Park, East-Shir-ley had restored itself to the position of slight favourite, but at a minute past six, the old Lancaster Park stand-by of spin had left the team with the game, set, but not quite match. East was 85 for nine and Lancaster Park bad won on the first inmings. For the first time in four innings, the opening pair failed. But although P. G. Coman attacked from the start and C. K. Smart defended stoically near the end, only B. A Haworth left any impression of a batsman. A. G. Duckmanton, B. C. Irving, and D. J. McKendry spun their wiles round the batsmen, but could not quite complete the task. In East’s continued first innings J. W. Grocott took up in the vein be left off on Saturday and looked as though he would stay. However, he was out for 56 when he opened out with nine wickets down. McKendry, four for 14 at stumps, was rewarded tor accuracy and sufficient variation with the first five wickets (in an innings) in the match. B. J. Ellis and P. Andrews again had a bright little opening partnership and the collapse in the top of the Lancaster Park batting came as a surprise. P. B. Wight completed an unhappy debut in the local competition. After taking a confident single off his first ball from Smart, he was bowled by the lowest ot shooters next ball However, A. G. Duckmanton was prepared to stay all day, and with R. M. Gearry as a watchful and co-opera-tive partner set about rehabilitating the innings. The runs came steadily, and with considerable ease near the end of the partnership of 72.

Duckmanton went and Dowker came to play one of his vintage little innings. The ball was not bit Raid, the scoring did not appear to be exceptionally fast, but the bail sped over the excellent outfield and Dowker’s 32 not out was made in half an hour. Gearry curbed his natural instincts very well and was unlucky that the innings had to be declared when he was starting to assert himself. C. K. Smart again toiled manfully, but B. G. Adamson took the eye once more. His figures do not read as outstanding bowling, but he had cruel luck in the number of balls that beat everything or were jumping too high for lbw decisions.

The umpires were Messrs J. W. T. Owens and G. N. Gearry, a willing and worthy substitute. LANCASTER PARK First innings .. ..MB Second Innings P. Andrews, run out .. 12 B. J. Ellis, b Smart .. 10 Si.
