Beauzami Beats The Favourites

Beauzami caused a minor upset and proved his Watkins Handicap form all wrong when he out-stayed Richetta and the favourite, Fair Filou, in the weight-for-age Harcourt Stakes at Trentham yesterday.

Although he was not the most popular fancy, Beauzami was not altogether devoid of sound form. He had finished stoutly for second to Fair Filou in the Wellington Handicap on the first d-y of the meeting, so was the 3/4 favourite of 10.

Beauzami, an eight-year-old Beau Repaire gelding, is raced by Mr K. Webb and the estate of V. R Webb and is trained at Te Rape by H P Long. Beauzami was competently ridden by G. F. Hughes, who has previously been twice successful m the Harcourt Stakes. Hughes's other wins were on Mainbrace (1961) and Lawful (1960). Beauzami ran the 11 furlongs in 2min IfiWaee, the same as Red Jester recorded in 1952. This time baa only been bettered twice since the d .stance was increased to a mile and three furlongs in 1940 Soneri recorded 2min 16sec in 1946. and the racerecord of 2min 15 l-ssec was established by Somerset Fair in 1957. Gallant Lady streaked away in the lead as the field left the straight. She was out by two lengths from Copper King as they ran Into the back. Saint Nicholas and Magician (outside) shared the third line in a similar gap ahead of Princess Merit. There was another short break to Richetta <lnside). Fair Filou. and Foxdonna and Beauzami ran alone at the rear. Copper King was still chasing Gallant Lady in a gap of four lengths as they ran to the five Saint Nicholas. Magician, and Foxdonna made a line of three in an other small gap. Fair Filou and Richetta were then making ground to pese Picaroon P'inceea Merit had dropped back to the rear alongside Beauzami. Gallant Lady was finished soon after they straightened up. and Richetta took a gap on the inner to run into the lead outside die furlong Saint Nicholas and Magician were hard at it in the chase after her. Fair Filou was fairly close at hand, and Beeuzami was coming into It wider out on the track. Grylls gave Fair Filou a cut with the whip and he bounded forward, but a stride or two later he was at the end of his run G. F. Hughes did not strike

but kept showing Beauzami the whip and he ran it out gamely to win by half a length. Richetta beat Fair Filou for second by a couple of lengths. Picaroon made a renewed bid for fourth, three lengths further back. Saint Nicholas was fifth in a gap of two lengths. He just shaded Magician, which failed to last out the distance, then came Clayton King, Gallant Lady, Princess Merit, with Fox donne last
