Ji Hings, brought Wilful to Trentham for only one race—the Pearce Handicap—and she proved the trip worth-while. Wilful kept her winning record as a miler intact when she out-lasted Gauntlet at the end of a mile in the first leg of the TA.B. double on the third day of the Wellington Racing Club’s spring meeting.

Wilful, a four-year-old Sabaean-Our Lorraine mare, is raced by Mr W. F. Copper Kins, a Chatsworth IT three-year-old in K Temperton’s Awapuni team, made all the pace, thee coped with strong challenges from Karinx and Tara's Pride to win the Nainai Handicap, second leg of the main double, by a short neck. Copper King, the ninth favourite of 13. paid £ll 14s and £3 13s for a win and a place and £164 15s fid for £1 with Wilful in the double. This dividend was shared by the holders of 1976 5s tickets, of which 583 were held on the course.

The meeting was held in fair summer weather and the track was hard and fast. The attendance was 12,360. On-course investments amounted to £192,112, including £34,087 10s on the doubles, compared with £166,794 on the third day last year. The total for the three days was £556,153 10s, against £300.668, an increase of £54,484 10s. Bunched In Behind Sparkling Maid, Baloo, Manana and Sage were the tail-ender* when the field settled down in the Pearce Handicap. Llanmai, Gauntlet

and Harvest Moon ran as one in the lead for a time, but Harvest Moon and Gauntlet went ahead at the end of a furlong. Gold Ruth was trailing on the inner of Llanmai, which was pulling double behind Gauntlet and had J. R. Dowling in bother. Dandeinee, Sir Barton and Wilful were closely bunched in behind, then came Zinder, Tyrol and Kawera at the head of the others.

Wilful moved up three wide alongside Gold Ruth and Llanmai aa they started on the big bend around to the straight. Harvest Moon and Gauntlet still ran as one in the lead. The closest of the others were Dandeinee, Tyrol and Kawera. Zinder was bandy and showing up wide out and Sir Barton was about fourth on the inner. Gauntlet had a slight lead as they ran to the furlong; but almost immediately Wilful moved up to challenge on his right. Dandeinee was coming into it wider out then. Llanmai was finirfied and Sir Barton was trying to come between Gold Ruth and Harvest Menn. It was a neck and neck struggle and they were ctoee to the line when Wilful inched ahead. Dandeinee ran it out well for third, a length behind Gauntlet and Sir Barton out-finished Harvest Moon for fifth by almost a neck. Gold Ruth was sixth, ahead of Kawera; then almost in line came Llanmai, Baloo, Manana and Doredeb. They were followed by Tampa, Vixen’s Pride, Tyrol and Zinder. Sparkling Maid was last. Narrow Win Copper King survived some strong challenges in the last furlong to win the Nainai Handicap at good odds for his Wellington owner, Mr W. N. Norwood. Fine Time, For Free and

High Diadain drifted right from the start and Copper King went ahesd inside the first furlong. Lady Lnrinda. Karinx, Sonare, Aqaba, Purserette, Expedite and Tara's Pride kept handy as they ran down the back.

Sonare joined Copper King in front five furlongs out and Karinx went forward to make it three in the lead as they ran to the straight. Tara’s Pride was close up; but Expedite was running into bother further back in the field.

Sonare dropped back as they ran to the furtong, where Copper King and Karinx were still disputing the pace. Expedite made a likely run towards a gap on the inner; but Tara’s Pride got there first and she had to change ground.

About half a furlong out it looked aa if Tara’s Pride might justify his position as favourite; but there was still not much between him, Copper King and Karinx. Then very close to the end Copper King pulled out a bit extra and that bid gave him victory by a short neck. Karinx, on the outer, was second and Tara’s Pride half a head back third. Expedite, which finished out in the middle of the track, was two lengths back fifth and High Disdain came right from the rear for sixth a length behind her Aqaba was next; then came Nell, Sonare, Lady Lorinda.
