FAIR BID’S SUCCESS
First Leg At Gisborne (N.Z. Press Association) GISBORNE, Sept. 11. The Poverty Bay Turf Club's spring meeting was held at Makaraka today in: mild, sunny weather. There was a large attendance and the track was in good order though easy. The T.A.B. double, Fair Bid and Monoceros, paid £ll 15s. for £l. The on-course turnover was £32.829 10s, compared with £30,207 last year. Caramelle, which finished first in the Turanganui Novice Stakes No. 1. was relegated to fourth after a lengthy inquiry. Four horses fell at the first fence in the opening races.
In the Poverty Bay Hack and Hunters’ Steeples the Hastings jumper Golden Ensign, when handy to the lead, crashed heavily seven furlongs from home. Golden Ensign broke his neck.
