FREETOWN (Sierra Leone), Sept. 10.
The Sierra Leone labour council has called a three-day general strike in protest against “bad handling of the country's finances" by the Government. The Prime Minister of Sierra Leone, Sir Milton Margai. arrived in London yesterday to have talks with Mr Macmillan. The labour council has criticised the Government's reception of the report of an official inquiry which found that activities of the Finance Ministry in 1960-61 “bordered on criminal negligence.” Four Ministers named in the report should have been dismissed, the council contends.
The acting-Prime Minister, Dr. John Karefa-Smart, announced last evening he had given the police complete power to deal with hooliganism. rioting or incitement to riot. He warned workers tn essential industries that it was illegal for them to strike and that they would be prosecuted if they did. Dr. Karefa-Smart said that if the labour council was dissatisfied, it should seek a solution through its representatives in Parliament. He said he was sure most of the workers had decided not to take part in the council’s “foolish decision."
