FRENCH GOODS
Boycott Proposal
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Sept. 11. Whether to impose » boycott of French goods if atomic tests are held in the PaHlc will be * topis for discussion between Mr T. E. Skinner, the president of the Federation of Labour, and representatives of Australian trade unions next week. Mr Skinner will visit Australia for the conference of the Australian Council of Trade Unions, which he will address on Monday. Mr Skinner said tonight that he would discuss the possibility of a joint boycott with Australian union officials.
It is nearly a week since the federation proposed a boycott if France insisted on holding the tests. The two organisations could tie up all French goods coming into Australia and New Zealand. The waterfront unions would carry out any ban the A.C.T.U. and the F.O.L. placed on French goods.
The national secretary of the Australian Federated Ironworker’s Association <Mr L. Short), said yesterday that the main problem of the two union organisations was to devise an effective ban. "Such a ban will have to be applied with great consideration to ensure it is a responsible action and not just an empty gesture,’’ Mr Short said.
