Police beait a suspect with a rhinoceros whip and a cosh to make him confess, a Home Office inquiry was told at Sheffield, Yorkshire, yesterday. the "Daily Express" reported.

A detective inspector and three other police officers had looked on “amused” as two detectives beat the man. the inquiry was told. Two other suspects had been beaten in the same way, it was alleged.

The inquiry is into the dismissal of two detectives, 27-year-old Derek Streets and 31-year-old Derek Millicheap, after they admitted to a court they beat the suspects. Streets was fined £75 and Millicheap £5O. They were ordered to share £9« coete. Both are appealing against dismissal. One of their grounds is that they were acting under the supervision of senior officers. Mr Geoffrey Baker, counsel for the Sheffield Watch Committee, told the inquiry that in Court the detectives had pleaded they acted in the heat of the moment during a struggle by the prisoners "Far from this being the position, these two officers deliberately resorted to brutality,” Mr Baker said.

Streets and Millicheap have already said they will resign from the force if they win their appeals. But they say they want to clear their names. according to the “Daily Express."
