23rd Term As President (N.Z. Press Association) GREYMOUTH. September 2. For the twenty-third year, the last 22 of them in succession, Mr A. V. Prendiville has been elected president of the United Mineworkers of New Zealand.
Mr Prendiville polled 1436 votes and his opponent, Mr D. G. Mcßae, 996, giving Mr Prendiville a majority of 446.
Mr Prendiville has been a miners' national councillor for 32 years. Mr J. White was re-elected unopposed as national secretary.
The returning officer, Mr J. T. McPhee, announced that there were insufficient nominations for an election for officers of the Grey Miners' Central Committee. He declared Messrs R. H. Mitchell and R. F. Beadle elected as president and secretary respectively. Messrs Mitchell and Beadle were also elected unopposed as national councillors of the United Mineworkers of New Zealand. In the ballot for the Australian delegate of the United Mineworkers. Mr W. T. Proctor polled 1287 votes and Mr Beadle 1126. giving Mr Proctor a majority of 161. He was declared elected. Mr McPhee said ballot papers were not received from Hughes Mines, Ltd., Matatrra, and Oamaru miners’ unions but the number of votes from these uniotis was 32 and they could not alter the result.
