Foxton, Seven Over Par, Wins Avondale Open

Only K. D. Foxton, of Canterbury’s top players, entered for the Avondale Golf Club’s open tournament yesterday. He won the senior championship by two shots from the Avondale club champion, D. J. Gaudin, but his total of 147 (72, 75) was seven shots over the scratch score. Foxton marred a steady display for 30 holes by tiring badly towards the finish, and dropping six shots in as many holes to finish the afternoon round in a five-over-scratch 75. But he looked, as usual, a very sound golfer for most of the day, and should be in good form next week-end for the major event of the golfing year, the Wills tournament on his home course, Russley.

Foxton was unable to achieve more than average length, but his tee shots and irons were usually wellplaced and gave him a number of good chances for birdies. But although he three-putted only once in the CULVERDEN OPEN TOURNAMENT Results of the Culverden Golf Club's open tournament held on Saturday were:— Senior.—36 holes gross: R. Bradley, 144; D. 36 holes, he sometimes struggled to get down in two, and putts of 10 feet at the sixteenth in the morning and the ninth after lunch gave him his only two birdies all day.

After his opening 72. two ahead of P. Amos and C. L. Jacobsen, Foxton scored bogeys at each of the first eight holes in the , afternoon before his birdie to turn in 34, one under. Bogeys followed at the next three, two of which are bogey fives—he was unable to score a birdie at any long hole—before he dropped two strokes at the thirteenth when a drive which just reached the rough left him an awkward lie. His wood only found the fairway, his third missed the green and he chipped badly, a fault that was to persist for the remainder of the round.

At the sixteenth he followed a fine long drive with an iron well short and dropped another, and the next cost a further two. He lifted his head on a chip which travelled only a foot or two and was then again well through. He missed the green at the last and again chipped badly. Gaudin with 75 , 74 played steadily, but a lapse over two or three holes in both rounds cost him a winning chance. Amos lost control of his long game, and Jacobsen also fell away In the afternoon. In which I. Dobson (72) and F. W. Roberts, the outstanding Avondale player in the last 10 years, both considerably improved their positions. G. T. Cormack played two consistent rounds of 75 to finish in third position.
