N.Z. Share Only £300 Of Tournament Money

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, September 1. K. D. G. Nagle, of Australia, stayed in front from first to last to win the Wiseman’s golf tournament in violent rain and 50 miles an hour winds at Chamberlain Park on Saturday. All but £3OO of the £2OOO prize money went to Australians. Nagle’s brilliant putting, especially at the start of the fourth and final round, contributed handsomely to his total of 281, three-under-scratch.

But even more important to his victory was his calmness and resolution after a wholly uncharacteristic start to his third round had jeopardised his leadership of the field.

E. A. Ball, a 23-year-old Australian, took second place two strokes behind Nagle, followed by P. R. Mills, the giant Victorian, a further two strokes behind Ball. The first New Zealander was F. X. Buckler, the Waikato professional, who won slightly more than £lOO by finishing sixth. Two amateurs, F. T. Malloy (Akarana) and F. T. Gordon (Hastings) figured high in tire list amid the welter of Australian professionals in the field. Fine Last Round

Malloy's last round of 71, when the wind was lashing so hard that the rain seemed to be travelling horizontally, was a performance of genuine distinction. It was only equalled by the former Australian champion, F. Phillips, and bettered by one of the most promising of the Australian professionals, A. A. Murray.

Only 200-300 hardy people battled around the course, and the takings were far below expectations. Television compelled the playing of the final round but all the conditions cried out for a postponement. Without exception, the overseas players were convinced that the conditions were too bad for play. The young New South Welshman, W. Dunk, retired after the third hole of the final round, notwithstanding that he was then among the leaders and certain to qualify for prize-money. Dunk’s protest was a pro-

test against the action of the tournament controllers in arranging to alter the flagsticks on some of the greens after part of the field had played their way past these points in the final round. He sent bis clubs back to the pavilion and carried on as the marker for A B. Jolly, the Titirangi professional, with whom he had been drawn. Nagle's Bad Start Nagle shook himself by beginning the morning round with 5,3, 6,4, s—five over scratch. . The next few holes not only affirmed Nagle's greatness: they put paid to his partner, Mills’ hopes of winning the tournament. At the ninth—and with 27 holes to play—Nagle was three strokes ahead. Mills fought back well to recover a stroke in the second half of this round and he entered the final round still with a definite chance. But from as early as the second hole Nagle showed that his putting touch was fully restored by holing a

four-footer and not until the sixteenth hole did he take three puts on any one green. It was fine, steady, golf by a player of great ability. In three tournaments in the last three weeks Nagle has won more than £l5OO.

Ball trudged steadfastly along, and the six 3’s he scored in each of the final two rounds were worth at least £lOO to him. < Distribution of the prize monev was: Nagle £370, Ball £277, Mills £175, L. Thomas £127, B. Devlin £127, Buckler £lOl, Phillips £B7, P. W. Thomson £B7. R. S. Brown. £7l, R, Tuohy £7l, B. J. Coxon £6O, W. J. Godfrey £5O, D Welsh £5O, T. A Grady £5O, J. Galloway £4l, Jolly £34, J. C. Davies £34, Murray £27.
