Boys’ Event Consistent plsy by P. V. Weber (Manawatu) and G. Clarke (Balclutha > enabled them to lead the qualifiers for the New Zealand boys' golf championship at Shirley yesterday. On a testing course they returned scores of 78 In the morning and again In the afternoon. The title-holder. M. W. Collins (Manor Park), qualified in fourth position, three strokes behind last year's runner-up. D. R. -Hope (Harewood), whose morning round of 76 was the best gross score of the day Thirteen of the competitors are on handicaps of seven or better, but three members of this select group—W. D. Gladstone (Ti Orangi). R. S. Peats (Harewood) and P. J. Watson (Taupo)—failed to gain a place among the top 16 to contest the championship. Another. J. M. Lister (Highfleld), gained the sixteenth position by lot after tying with B. Tburell Ka.tangata) and J A Marsden. Hope experienced an eventful morning's golf. He made a promising start with a birdie at the second hole and gained two more st the eighth and twelfth. But the joy of these successes was mingled with the sorrow of four three-putt greens Then at the eighteenth, after his tee shot had gone no more than 50yds. he struck a fine No. 4 wood to within 18ft of the hole and sank his putt for the fourth birdie of the round His score of 76 gave him a tupstroke lead at lunch Collin* played some superb iron shots, and although his putting was indifferent, he showed his capabilities in the afternoon when he holed a 30footer to' a birdie three at the seventh. He was one under par at the turn but lost strokes on the homeward journey. The first and second rounds of the championship proper will be played today, and the semifinals and final tomorrow.
