SCHOOLS' HOCKEY Linwood, Waimea Hold Lead

“The Press'' Special -Service AUCKLAND, August 27. Christchurch West and Linwood High Schools both scored victories in the third round of the inter-secondary schools' .hockey tournament at Auckland today. Napier Boys’ High and Auckland Grammar each has three wins in section A, Linwood is half-a-point ahead of two schools in section B, and Waimea College (Nelson) is unbeaten in section C. Today's results were:— Section A: Auckland Grammar 5. Wanganui Technical 1: Onslow College 2, Mount Roskill Grammar 1; Napier B.H S 3, Tauranga College 1. Section B: Kelston H.S. 0, Hamilton H,S. 0; Linwood H.S. 7, Seadon Memorial College 0; Kamo H.S. 3. Wanganui H.S. 2. Section C: Northland College 1, Colenso HS. 0; Christchurch West H.S. 7, Avondale 0; Waimea College 3, Mt. Albert Grammar 0. West High School had a relatively easy game against Avondale. The short-passing game of the Christdhurch side was executed particularly well on occasions, but it again experienced difficulty on the right, finishing the game with only ten men The inside trio for West of the Fletcher brothers provided good penetration, w'hilst the centrehalt also played well. Goals for West were scored by R. Greenaway (2). G. Fletcher. K Fletcher (2). and B. Fletcher (2). Waimea College, after its excellent display on Monday, played rather disappointingly m a game, which was rugged but clean.

A. McCarthy scored a good runaway goal in the first half which ended with the score one-all. In the second spell D Gribble and C. Gass both netted for Waimea. P. Kelly again played a Solid game for the Nelson side. Linwood made several changes for what was a very easy fixture against Seddon Memorial, but nevertheless played a good, controlled short-passing game. The inside forwards, M. Lumsden, C. Bhana and L. Hutchison. as well as A. Chesney, at centre-half, all played well. The first half saw a spate of goals by Linwood but the second spell was much more closely-contested, the hockey being very keen. Goals for Linwood were scored by C. Bhana (2).

Section play ends on -Wednesday with Waimea requiring two wins to head off Christchurch West and Linwood also needing two victories to win its section.
