Local Body Share Of Highway Through City
(From Our Own Reporter)
WELIJNGTON, Aug. 21. Officers of the National Roads Board were asked today to find out w’hether the Timaru City Council had had to pay its share of the cost of reconstructing the State highway through the city. Mr N. A. Rattray (Counties' Association) asked this afternoon whether this had been done, and whether, if it had not. the National Roads Board was correct in refusing to pay all of the cost of reconstructing the State highway through Ashburton. The secretary of the board (Mr C. N. Johnson) said it was the general rule of the
board that boroughs and cities had to pay the cost of the work involved in reconstructing the area Bft from either side of the kerb. The chief highways engineer (Mr F. A. Langbein) said he thought the board had paid for all the work done at Timaru, but was not sure.
Asked later about the position, Mr Rattray said he wished to clarify whether or not the board had paid only for the reconstruction of the carriageway, and local bodies for reconstruction of the portion of the road used for parking possibly under revenue-returning parking meters.
Under this scheme, he said, the board would pay about two-thirds of the reconstruction cost, and local bodies one-third, because that was roughly the proportion of highway they would use for parking purposes.
