JET SERVICE TO CITY

Airlines’ Plans Sought Qantas Empire Airways, Ltd., has been asked whether it would be prepared to operate a Boeing service through Christchurch next year. Cr. A. R. Guthrey, chairman of the Christchurch City Council’s airport committee and a director of Tasman Empire Airways, Ltd., said yesterday the matter had been put to the district sales manager of the Australian airline (Mr L. N. Eagle) for communication to his head office. If Qantas is not interested, Cr. Guthrey is prepared to head a deputation to the Minister of Civil Aviation (Mr McAlpine) supporting Air India in its desire to operate through Christchurch Mr McAlpine said no application had been received by him from Qantas. The president of the Canterbury branch of the Air League of New Zealand (Mr R. F. Short) has asked the Christchurch manager of Air India (Mr R. M. Ruane) to have his company make its intentions about the use of Christchurch airport known to the Government.
