PROTEST BY BOXER
Alleges Judge Was Late (NX. Presa Association) i WELLINGTON, August 2». The absence of one of the three judges at the start of Monday night's bout between the New Zealand welter-weight boxing champion, Johnny Lawrence, and Johnny Torres, of America, brought a protest today from Lawrence's manager. He Intends to take the matter up with the New Zealand council, and also to "see what can be done legally.” -In a split decision in Torres’ favour, the judge who was late. Mr C. Head, was one of the two who voted for the American. The Wellington Boxing Association time-keeper, Mr T. W. Cameron, agreed today that Mr Head was at least 30 seconds late in getting to his post. Lawrence’s manager, Mr S. Cameron, said: "The judge should have been in position right from the start —the fight was not truly judged.” Mr W. McConville, chairman of the Wellington Boxing Association, said it was “regrettable” that Mr Head was not in his seat from the start—"but we'll hear from him whether he was In a position to see the fight in the opening stages.” Mr Head was out of Wellington today. .
