UNIVERSITIES TOURNEY Otago, Three Wins, Has Gone Ahead

After the second day of the New Zealand universities winter tournament today Otago, with wins in badminton, judo and crosscountry, has taken the lead. Overnight snow and heavy rain forced the postponement of the golf. The weather cleared during the day and hockey and the cross-country events were held.

Cross Country Taking four of the first 10 pfeces, Oiiago won the crosscountry teams’ event held on a rain soaked course. The placings for the Dixon Trophy were: Otago, 21 points, 1; Auckland, 23, 2; Canterbury, 47, 3; Victoria, 71, 4; Massey, 113, 5; Lincoln, 128, 6 x Individual placing® for the Sorymgeour Trophy were: R. It was unfortunate for Otago that the electric scoreboard showed it as being down 40-42 when it was actually leading 4140 with only a few seconds of play remaining. Frantic play by Otago to gain possession cost it the game when an Otago player was fouled. Canterbury scored its second win in three games when it easily accounted for Lincoln, 68-31. Women’s Basketball Otago maintained its unbeaten record to the women’s basketball section with a clear win over Victoria. Results were:— Otago 37, Victoria 21; Auckland 28, Canterbury 24. Badminton For the fourth successive year Otago won the badminton Otago beat Auckland, 9-8. In an earlier match, Victoria beat Canterbury, 12-4. Men’s Hockey Otago was to an unbeatable position at the end of the sec-

ond day's play in the men’s hockey. Results were:— Otago 2, Victoria 0; Massey 2. Canterbury 1; Auckland 2. Lincoln 1; Otago 1, Massey 0; Lincoln 2. Victoria 1; Canterbury' 2, Auckland 0. Golf With toe Balmacewen course covered in snow to the morning and waterlogged for most of the afternoon, the golf was abandoned today. It is hoped that match and medal play will be held tomorrow'. The match play qualifiers will be decided on the 36 holes played on Monday. Chess After two rounds, Otago leads the chess with 61 points, followed by Victoria with 5 points.
