Pipe Dream Sprints Fast At Takanini

“The Press" Special Service

AXICKU&'D. August 20. Fencourt's meeting with Pipe Dream and company ait the Takaniind barrier trials today was mot the close contest expeoted. Pipe .Dream was first easily and Fencourt last of the six which competed in a five furlong sprint for open-class horses. Pipe Dream ran the others off their feet and scored easily. Pipe Dream has not raced since he finished unplaced over six furlongs at Rotorua last February. He won the Railway Handicap at Ellerslie not long before and has a good claim to being the quickest sprinter in his home district. He is to start another season in the Admiralty Handicap at Ellerslie tih'is week-end. Pipe Dream ran quickly to a good lead. He coots retied to gallop very freely to tlhe post, where his rider, G. F. Hughes, steadied him right down so that Gold Chick and Dry Martini right at the finish were able to run him close. Pipe Dream finished nearly a length ahead of Gold Chick in Imin 4 l-ssec and Dry Martini -was half a length further back. Fencourt, after toa'iilling Pipe Dream to the last furlong, gave ground quickly. It seems as iif he has some distance to go before he gets to the form that made him such a good two-year-old last season. Colts by Terrington. Talismano. Belagiacoa and Red Marlin and fiUaes by Golovine and Gabador were first home in six heats for two-year-olds. Poised, the filly by Gabador from Parity, made quickest time (29 4-ssec) over the two furlongs and a half down the straight. Poised ran in the fourth heat for two-year-olds against seven opponents. A quick beginning had her leading almost immediately and she finished with three lengths on Rose of Joy, a chestnut filly by Amyn from Rose of Clyde. Poised is a light brown mare from Parity and a sister of the three-year-old Repeal. She is owned by Miss M. M. Plumley and trained at Takanini by R. J. Wallace, the combination which collected five firsts with Repeal last season and some useful minor placings. The next-quickest to Poised was Hamiir, a bay colt by Bella,gi'oca from Skyloch. which took the fifth heat from a Le Filou—Ursa colt and seven others, which included a colt from Passive and a half-brother of Mali Peter by Messmate. Hamiir. which is trained by G. G. Cameron for Messrs B. R. and T. Girdlhar, of Pukekohe, just shaded the Le Filou—Ursa colt and Kandy (Messmate—-Divine), which also shaped promisingly. Hamir is a half-brother of Skyline, which won two of her four races when a two-year-old last season. The successful filly by Golovine was Velusha. which took the second heat impressively. A good-looking brown, from Operashah, Velusha is owned and trained by M. Martinovich, who often has a smart young horse to carry his colours. Velusha is a sister of Persian Star, with which Mr Marinovidh has been successful. She

began smartly and ran straight and we’ll right until the finish, where she had a leng.th on the Sabaean — Moonee Valley filly. The Torrington colt Hail, which won the first heat, is a bay from Greetings and one of R. J. Wallace's team. He nosed out Pinna Boy, a colt by Rawalpindi from Moor Repstre, which Wallace also trains, and Skymaster. Overdraft, the bay colt by Red Marlin from Hoover owned by Mr R. A. McEwen, of Eallersfie, and trained at Takanini by D. R. Cameron, ran away with the Sixth heat. His margin over Bing Link (second) was two lengths and a half and the rest were even further back. The colt by Talismano from Cocotte, Which won the third heat easily, is trained, along with the Le Filou —Ursa colt, by I. J. and I. R. Tucker at Takanini. He has the look of a good one and the colt from Ursa also shows plenty of quality.
